Perry and Bob Marley, Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer

[edit]

There are some errors in the article. The Wailers did never record in The Black Ark studio. They left Perry in April 1971, before The Ark was built. Perry produced the Wailers in recording studios owned by others. That's why artists some years later, like Max Romeo, Gladiators and Junior Murvin, sounds much better with Perry as producer.--Caspiax (talk) 06:42, 2 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

homophobia?

[edit]

I have heard from people who've seen Scratch perform that goes into spiels about the immorality of homosexuality. I think he's pretty insane as well. Anyone?

Well he is certainly free to condemn what he perceives as immoral behaviour

        • Come on hes a great creator of reggae and dub don't mock him its just his own humour and wisdom that makes you mock him****, SqueakBox 15:23, August 6, 2005 (UTC)

Homosexuality, insanity, etc.

[edit]

Is he mad tho? I met Lee Perry in Brixton, London, England in 2005. He was walking around with his children and I bought him a drink. He declined anything stronger than orange juice, was very quiet and obviously devoted to his children. I was quite disappointed.  SmokeyTheCat  •TALK• 15:34, 27 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Yup, he's insane, totally off his rocker in every way. Last interview I saw with him he claimed to be anti-black (but not like Michael Jackson, he said, whatever that means) and hated the blackness of Jamaica because black is associated with the devil. I have no idea what it means, either, just relating.

He said one shouldn't kill animals or eat meat but that he kills who has to be killed, again he refuses to clarify, stating only that since he wore the "ring of Solomon" he was now "lord of the rings" and had the power over life and death. He's frequently ranted against gays, but frankly I'd say that's par for the course for the following reasons:

1. He rants against EVERYTHING, he feuds with everyone and he makes very little sense so people kind of let it slide 2. Everyone in Jamaica would more or less agree that homosexuals need to be lynched. Sad but true, homophobia is beyond common there, it's carried out with almost religious fervor.

Perhaps he is also playing to his audience, of journalists or whatever. It is one thing to be an insane unknown but when you are a legend with a nutty reputation....perhaps he was just playing it up. I wonder if his music is still any good. It certainly used to be brilliant, I listen to his Congos production a lot. Incredible. Beethoven seemed to go insane as he got older yet his music tells another story which is why I wonder about the music. Shame the Jamaicans are so intolerant of gays; its not like that here on the Caribbean mainland, SqueakBox 13:49, 14 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
I think something should be mentioned in the article about his "eccentricities" claiming aliens helped him make records, etc. Not quite sure how to do it though. Josh 13:42, 10 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Mystic Warrior/Mystic Warrior Dub Release Date

[edit]

I remember listening to this album (on vinal) in 1988 but its listed as 1997 does anyone know the actual release date? Htaccess 15:40, 12 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

1997 is certainly wrong. According to Ariwa Records' website [1], it was released in 1986. Perry Fanatix lists the release as having been "recorded & mixed at ARIWA Studios, London, 1989". [2] In the sleeve notes to "Method To The Madness – The Best Of Mad Professor", Neil Fraser is quoted as saying "[Perry] came down with Winston Edwards and Joe Gibbs in September 1984 and Scratch said he wanted to do some work, so I said "No problem." He voiced "Judgement Inna Babylon" in my studio and when he finished with his tracks, he then ended up voicing a load of tracks for me as well and a lot of them came out on Mystic Warrior, which wasn’t released until 1988, but there was at least another two albums' worth left that never came out." The Upsetters

[edit]

Why does the link to the Upsetters point directly to Lee "Scratch" Perry? I am aware that he has been involved in producing that musical formation, but he himself is not the Upsetters.

There is now a stub about them at The Upsetters. --Ezeu 06:27, 16 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The film

[edit]

I think the sentence about the feature film should have the word "definitive" removed. Let history decide its value after it is released. Dface 21:20, 5 December 2006 (UTC)dface he —Preceding unsigned comment added by 80.42.134.19 (talk) 18:06, 13 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Black Ark burning

[edit]

In regards to the sentence: "Perry has constantly insisted that he burned the Black Ark himself in a fit of rage, but it was most likely an accident due to faulty wiring." Is there any basis for why it was most probably faulty wiring? Perry was a bit of a pyro, it isn't remotely hard to imagine him doing it deliberately. Cheers. 121.44.197.156 07:54, 15 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It's not remotely hard to imagine that it could have been an accident that he took credit for, either. Or that he might claim that it was burned down by the devil or aliens. At very least that sentence deserves a fact tag. It now has that. ta. Josh (talk) 15:32, 19 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

discography incomplete?

shouldn't his discography include the early bob marley albums he produced? and also "blood vapour" of 1990, a limited pressing from L.A. records? 68.193.173.240 (talk) 01:19, 6 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Rewrite ideas

[edit]

The "Later Career" section has more content than his earlier career periods. His most influential works belong to the 60s and 70s. I'm going to reduce and tighten the Later Career section and increase the earlier period material.

The result of the move request was: Withdrawn, due to lack of any expression of support for this interpretation of the quoted WP:NICKNAME / WP:STAGENAME guideline, along with a desire to avoid annoying Wikipedians with repetition of similar prior discussions (of which I, as the nominator, was previously unaware). Lee "Scratch" PerryLee Perry (recording artist) – or perhaps Lee Perry (music producer) – Per WP:NICKNAME: "avoid (for example) adding a nickname, or a contracted version of the original first name(s) in quotes between first and last name. For example: Bill Clinton, not William "Bill" Clinton." (Also see Sammy Gravano, Whitey Bulger, Stephen Flemmi, Tex Watson, etc. – apologies for citing so many criminals as examples, but they seem to spring to mind readily.) Early Life

[edit]

I've added a new section on his early life, since I think it's important to get some background. Especially for the people who are asking if he has always been eccentric or did that only happen later in life. If anyone has the Katz biography on Perry and would like to contribute before I get my hands on it that you be ace. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Alexeud (talkcontribs) 17:26, 6 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Perry's studio residence between '68 and '73

[edit]

There is no mention of what studio Perry was using between leaving Joe Gibbs' and building the Black Ark in '73. I'm pretty sure he was using Randy's studio 17. 62.30.221.145 (talk) 12:54, 14 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
