NationalityChinese-American[8]

Ada Wong[a] is a fictional character in Resident Evil (Biohazard in Japan), a survival horror video game series created by the Japanese company Capcom. She was first mentioned in the original Resident Evil (1996), before being introduced as a supporting character and antiheroine in Resident Evil 2 (1998). Ada is a spy and mercenary who is often hired to steal biological weapons for various organizations, although she betrays her employers on numerous occasions to save protagonist Leon S. Kennedy from dire situations.

Ada is featured in several Resident Evil games, novelizations, and films, and has also appeared in other game franchises such as Project X Zone, Teppen, and Dead by Daylight. Sally Cahill originally voiced Ada for her initial video game appearance, and subsequently, other actresses have portrayed the character, including Li Bingbing and Lily Gao in the live-action Resident Evil films.

Video game publications have described Ada as one of the best female video game characters. While several journalists praised her relationship with Leon and her portrayal as a morally ambiguous femme fatale, others argued that her design was overly sexualized.

Appearances

In the Resident Evil series

Ada Wong is a Chinese-American spy and mercenary who recurs as an antiheroine in Capcom's survival horror video game series Resident Evil.[13][14] Her background before working in espionage remains unknown.[13] Ada was introduced as a supporting character in Resident Evil 2 (1998),[8][15] which takes place in 1998.[16] She is hired by an unnamed organization to steal the G-virus mutagen developed by the pharmaceutical company Umbrella Corporation.[16][17] Ada infiltrates Umbrella's biological warfare laboratory in Raccoon City, a fictional American metropolitan area that becomes infested with zombies following a viral outbreak.[16][18] Her relationship with rookie police officer Leon S. Kennedy has been explored.[13] She meets and allies with Leon until she is outed as a mercenary.[16][19] Ada later hunts scientist Annette Birkin in sewers and briefly become a playable character in 2019 remake of Resident Evil 2.[19] Despite being severely wounded, Ada helps Leon destroy the T-103 Tyrant and escapes Raccoon City before its destruction by a nuclear strike as part of a cover-up by the U.S. government.[16][18][19]

Ada returns in Resident Evil 4 (2005), which is set in 2004 in a rural Spanish village.[16] She is sent by Albert Wesker to retrieve a sample of the mind-controlling "Las Plagas" parasite used by the cult Los Iluminados.[16][20] Ada enlists the help of researcher Luis Sera to obtain the sample, and encounters Leon during his mission to rescue the U.S. president's daughter Ashley Graham, who has been abducted by the cult.[16][21] After helping Leon kill the cult's leader, Osmund Saddler, Ada escapes in a helicopter with the sample.[16][21] Later ports of Resident Evil 4 for PlayStation 2 include a new scenario featuring Ada as the playable character. Entitled "Separate Ways", it depicts the events of the main game from her perspective and highlights her relationship with Leon.[13][22][23] A series of unlockable records, designated "Ada's Report", detail Ada's relationship with Wesker and his role in the plot.[24]

In Resident Evil 6 (2012), which primarily takes place in 2013, Ada investigates National Security Advisor Derek C. Simmons, a former associate who is obsessed with her, and discovers that Simmons has transformed his assistant Carla Radames into her doppelgänger.[16][25][26] After killing Carla and helping Leon defeat Simmons, Ada destroys the lab where her clone was created and accepts a new assignment.[27]

Other appearances

Ada features in several Resident Evil films. She appears in the adult animated film Resident Evil: Damnation (2012), in which she poses as a Bioterrorism Security Assessment Alliance (BSAA) agent to infiltrate the Eastern Slav Republic and obtain a sample of the "Las Plagas" parasite used in the country's civil war.[28] Ada also appears in Resident Evil: Retribution (2012), the fifth installment in director Paul W. S. Anderson's live-action Resident Evil film series.[29] She is a former agent of Umbrella who teams up with Alice to escape from an underwater Umbrella facility.[29] She did not return for the sixth and final film, Resident Evil: The Final Chapter (2016), dying offscreen.[30] Ada appears in the mid-credits scene of the live-action reboot film, Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City (2021). She was originally intended to have a larger role, but director Johannes Roberts believed that there were too many characters in the film.[31]

Ada is a playable character in non-canonical Resident Evil games.[32][33] She features in the "Heroes Mode" of the third-person shooter Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City (2012),[32] and the online multiplayer game Resident Evil Re:Verse (2022).[33] She also appears in games from other franchises, including the browser-based hack and slash game Onimusha Soul (2013),[34] as a non-player character in the tactical role-playing game Project X Zone 2 (2015),[35] asymmetric gameplay Dead by Daylight (2016) as a playable character,[b] Street Fighter V (2016) as an alternate skin for Kolin,[37] as a costume in adventure game Knives Out (2017),[38] as a fighter in Puzzle Fighter (2017),[39] and in the digital collectible card game Teppen (2019).[40] In 2023, she also appeared in the two crossover events of mobile games: Puzzles & Survival and State of Survival.[41][42]

Ada features in novelizations of the films and games[43][44] and plays a supporting role in the third novel, Resident Evil: City of the Dead (1999), in a series by S. D. Perry.[44] Capcom screenwriters created two Resident Evil 2 radio dramas, Chiisana Tōbōsha Sherry (The Little Runaway Sherry) and Ikiteita Onna Spy Ada (The Female Spy Ada Lives). The dramas were broadcast on Radio Osaka in 1999 and later released by Suleputer as two CDs entitled Biohazard 2 Drama Album.[10][45][46] After the events of Resident Evil 2, they follow Ada's mission to retrieve Sherry Birkin's pendant with the G-virus sample from Umbrella enforcer HUNK; ultimately, Ada realizes her feelings for Leon and decides to quit the espionage business to return to him.[10][45][46] Several comic books based on the games were released. She appeared in the Resident Evil: The Official Comic Magazine and BIO HAZARD 2 comics series.[47] She is a character in Bandai's Resident Evil Deck Building Card Game (2011).[48] Merchandise featuring Ada includes action figures, figurines, statues, plushies, and t-shirts.[49]

Concept and design

In early versions of Resident Evil 2, Ada was a researcher named Linda who helps the player throughout the story, but this was changed for the final game.[50] The name "Ada" was first mentioned in the original Resident Evil (1996) by designer Kazunori Kadoi, having been randomly conceived by designer Kazunori Kadoi.[51] When development for Resident Evil 2 began, director Hideki Kamiya and the staff decided to expand Ada into a full character, and invited Kadoi for a meeting to discuss what type of person Ada is; Kadoi said he randomly thought of the name.[51] During the first prototype, she was written as an Umbrella researcher tasked with retrieving the virus.[52] After it was discarded, writer Noboru Sugimura later transformed Ada into an enigmatic corporate spy.[51][52] Her appearance was designed by the artists Isao Ohishi and Ryoji Shimogama.[53]

In Resident Evil 2, she develops an ambiguous romance with Leon as they save each other's lives throughout the game.[8][13][16] In the 2019 remake of Resident Evil 2, more time was spent developing Ada and Leon's relationship, as the creative team felt that it progressed too quickly in the original game.[54] Executive producer Jun Takeuchi suggested that the kiss between Ada and Leon occur earlier in the remake, a choice that Kamiya believed "makes Ada feel more manipulative of Leon".[55] Ada's red dress from the original version of the game is initially covered by a beige trench coat in the remake, which Kadoi said was a more "realistic" and "believable" look for a spy.[56]

Ada and Leon's relationship is further explored in Resident Evil 4 and "Separate Ways".[13][57] Her pose on the title screen of "Separate Ways" was inspired by the poster for the 1990 film La Femme Nikita.[8] Producer Masachika Kawata stated that he wanted to create something that could feature Ada, but the development time had grown too long. Later on, Kawata included "Separate Ways" to give Ada a backstory and a unique game.[58] Ada's red side-split dress and choker from the original version of the game were replaced by a red woolly jumper and leather harness in the 2023 remake of Resident Evil 4.[59][60][61]

In Resident Evil 6, players can unlock Ada as a playable character after completing the game's three main campaigns. Executive producer Hiroyuki Kobayashi believed this made her storyline "more enjoyable" by enhancing her ambiguity because "one of the themes of Ada's story is a lone spy working in secret".[62] Ada was intended to appear in Resident Evil Village (2021) as a mysterious masked figure who saves civilian Ethan Winters, but was cut from the game due to "conflicting scenarios".[63]

Voice-over and live-action actresses

Voice actress Sally Cahill played Ada Wong in her initial appearance in Resident Evil 2, and reprised the role in Resident Evil 4 and The Darkside Chronicles.[1] Ada has also been voiced by Megan Hollingshead in The Umbrella Chronicles,[2] and Courtenay Taylor in Operation Raccoon City, Resident Evil 6, and Damnation.[3][4][5]

Michelle Lee provided the motion capture performance for Ada in Resident Evil 6.[4] Jolene Andersen provided the voice and motion capture for Ada in the 2019 remake of Resident Evil 2.[6] Lily Gao, who played Ada in the live-action Resident Evil film Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City (2021),[12] provided the character's voice and motion capture in the 2023 remake of Resident Evil 4.[8] Chinese actress Li Bingbing portrayed Ada in Retribution, the fifth installment of the live-action series.[11]

Reception

Game publications have described Ada Wong as one of the best female video game characters.[64][65][66] Critics praised her as a femme fatale,[8][67] but criticized her for fitting neatly into the stereotype of the "Dragon Lady" trope and for portraying a "bitch" personality in Resident Evil 4, due to her supposed death from Resident Evil 2.[8][68] Some publications have also praised Ada's relationship with Leon,[13][69] though Harri Chan of Polygon argued that Ada has not been provided any other path for character growth.[8] Stephanie Jennings wrote in Feminism in Play that Ada's sexualization is intended to improve female gamers' gaming experiences. In Jennings' view, Ada and her appearance in Resident Evil 6 demonstrate the intersectional potential of the feminine gaze. While Ada is one of the few multicultural characters in the series, Jennings expressed disappointment with the games' complete whitewashing of her Chinese heritage.[70] Mike Wehner of The Escapist observed that Capcom was manipulating with Resident Evil's timeline, particularly Ada's fate, when she returned in Resident Evil 4 after her supposed death in Resident Evil 2.[17]

Ada has repeatedly been brought into broader analyses of the male gaze in video games.[14][71][72] Critics have argued that the in-game cinematics in Resident Evil 4 focused on Ada's slit dress – noted as unrealistic and unsuitable for a zombie apocalypse – and body, holding that her appearance was intended to appeal to male audiences.[14][60][73] Her role was also compared to that of Ashley Graham, with Ada resisting patriarchal convention by remaining beyond the male protagonist's control.[74] In Tropes vs. Women in Video Games, feminist media critic Anita Sarkeesian criticized Ada's outfit, particularly her use of high heels in combat roles,[71] and argued that the attire was designed to attract men.[75] Conversely, digital media scholar Esther MacCallum-Stewart said that Resident Evil's female characters possess unique qualities making them viable choices for players to select over their male counterparts, and that their alternate combat attire helped avoid criticism of pandering to the male gaze.[76] Critic Jenny Platz opined that Ada is genderfluid and wrote that Ada possessed traits typically associated with males, such as "strength and intelligence", as well as female traits, such as "beauty and poise".[77]

Lily Gao's vocal performance as Ada in the 2023 remake of Resident Evil 4 was criticized by fans, resulting in the game being review bombed.[78][79] Michael McWhertor of Polygon criticized the dialogue as unnatural, speculating whether Gao was given improper direction in an attempt to generate a "cool" personality to set Ada apart from Leon.[80] Gao deleted her Instagram posts after she was harassed online,[79] later saying: "My Ada is a survivor. She is unpredictable, resilient, and absolutely not a stereotype."[8]
