Historicly, English, German and Russian have been the languages most chemistry articles are published in. My university's chemistry department therefore had a foreign language requirement, either 10 units or German or Russian. When it came time for me to fulfil the requirement, the only German class I could make fit my schedule met every day at 7:30 am, so I took Russian 3 days a week at 1:00 pm.
