Photo of Sensei Koichi Tohei wanted

[edit]

If anyone can find a non-copyrighted photo of Tohei to add here I would be grateful. :)

Capitalization

[edit]

I have done some de-capitalization; neither aikido nor judo, zen, mind, doctor or pleurisy needs to be spelled with a capital in English. With Ki-aikido I am not sure, though. Ki-Aikido, Ki-aikido or just ki-aikido? Aikikai is the name of an organisation, so is Ki no Kenkyukai/Ki Society, and they should have a capital as opposed to aikido. But with ki-aikido I just don't know. Habj 10:36, 27 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Ah. Ok. I wasnt aware of that. In my club we use Ki-Aikido with capital letter for both Ki and Aikido. As for all the organisations, its a bit confusing to be honest...Ki no Kenkykai, Aikikai and all that..I just typed what I thought was fitting. :) But I'll keep my eyes out in the future.

Yes it is confusing... and you do see lots of people spelling Aikido, Karate etc. but so far we seem to have a more or less concensus that these are not quite correct. Then there are lots of grey zones. Habj 11:55, 27 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Shin Shin Toitsu Aikido

[edit]

Please note. I noticed that the previous spelling of 'Shin Shin Toitsu Aikido' went like this: 'Shinshin Toitsu Aikido'. I changed it to Shin Shin both in this Tohei article and Ki aikido article, for that is how it is spelled on the official Ki Society homepage.

I assume that the official site is correct in it's spelling, but nobodys perfect right :) So if anyone has any objections against 'Shin Shin..', please mention it in here.

I am not so sure there is a right or wrong here. Written Japanese does not use spaces the way we do. Habj 18:05, 2 Jan 2005 (UTC)
Written japanese does not use spaces, or upper/lower cases the way we do indeed, but your way is nicer. There are often several ways to transcript japanese words into western languages.
The page on japanese yoga, which inspired Koichi Tohei for the "shin shin toitsu" part, use this spelling: Shinshin-tōitsu-dō ::(https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shinshin-t%C5%8Ditsu-d%C5%8D)

Copyvio?

[edit]

I have not compared the texts thoroughly, but some sentences - like "Tohei saw action in China and was stranded there at the end of the war until his repatriation in 1946" - are identical to the entry in Stanley Pranin's Encyclopedia of Aikido. [1]. // Habj 00:24, 23 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hey its me Fred26 on a different comp. :) Sorry for the late reply, I've put my focus on Shinto Muso-ryu so Tohei doesn't get all my attention anymore. Anyways, I honestly dont remember adding that above mentioned text, it was prolly someone else. When I first added the article I had practically zero info on his war-years so I left it empty. 217.209.26.241 10:44, 20 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

NOTABLE STUDENTS

The following comment was added by 24.119.234.36 to the article page, moving to the talk page. utcursch | talk 15:34, 14 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I don't believe that Steven Seagal ever trained under Tohei Sensei . The name really should be deleted as Seagal is an actor (poor, may I add) unless certain poof is available that Seagal trained under Koichi Tohei. I am only a Sandan, but Sensei Tohei did hand me my Shodan document and I trained under him for only a couple of days each of two visits to Eureka,Calif. Still proof of Seagal under Tohei Sensei should be proven. It really is diminishing to see Segal's name under the names of real Aikido practitioners.

George Wilson

I have trained in Honolulu, Hawaii under Seichi Tabata Sensei, as Uchi-deshi for over 10 years. I have heard many stories of Steven Seagal in Japan, but none of the stories corroborate Seagal training under Koichi Tohei. j.b.koffman ----— Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.88.163.83 (talk) 07:57, 5 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Under the heading " Notable Students", I believe there is an omission of one of Tohei's first (in Hawaii) , most fervent and loyal students. I find it interesting and troubling that Seichi Tabata Sensei , Chief Instructor of the Honolulu Ki Society 8th Dan in Shin Shin Toitsu Aikido, Ki rank of Okuden. who trained with Tohei Sensei for almost 60 years is not mentioned, while his son Calvin is noted. I would appreciate knowing why he is not mentioned and/or the omission rectified! j. brent Koffman76.88.163.83 (talk) 08:31, 5 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
