Name?

[edit]

Anybody know why it is called "Madrona Marsh"? Are there madrona trees on the site?24.84.62.155 (talk) 00:38, 21 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I think it is named after the street Madrona Street... I am not sure of the origin of that name as the one book I know of that discusses place names in the area doesn't seem to mention it. It is unlikely that the marsh ever contained madrone trees, as this is the wrong habitat. They generally grow on wet mountain slopes and in canyons - I've never seen one in a wetland in CA. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.69.28.55 (talk) 18:34, 1 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Not being in Torrance right now to read the sign that's posted on the outside of the Marsh, I can't say for sure, but I'm pretty sure that the Marsh is mostly open to public entrance -- subject to a few restrictions preventing abuse of the land. At the very least, the gate on the north side is usually unlocked.

Did not see this when I made my changes. However, "off-limits to uncontrolled" is a confusing double negative; and following the "once was" with a statement about guided tours implies that controlled access is still in force. If not, you may want to add a direct statewment to the effect that public access is now either encouraged or discouraged to clarify your uncertainty - Marshman 19:37, 20 Oct 2004 (UTC)
  • Sorry 'bout the confusion. I grew up in the area and was drawing some of the info from memory. - Lucky 6.9 19:33, 31 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Nope, they are locking people out now, you can't get in outside of 'designated hours' unless you jump the fence. Heaven forbid there is any tiny bit of open space in Torrance that isn't bulldozed or fenced in... I grew up in the area too (much to my displeasure) and yes, the gate used to be unlocked. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.69.28.55 (talk) 18:31, 1 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
