A thank you note

[edit]

Thanks for reminding me about the so-called GFDL you put in my Three Shuffles and a Draw images. Basically, I don't know how would I tag picture I took myself. Nanami Kamimura|(talk) 10:59, Mar 10, 2005 (UTC)

The Humungous Image Tagging Project

[edit]

Hi. You've helped with the Wikipedia:WikiProject Wiki Syntax, so I thought it worth alerting you to the latest and greatest of Wikipedia fixing project, User:Yann/Untagged Images, which is seeking to put copyright tags on all of the untagged images. There are probably, oh, thirty thousand or so to do (he said, reaching into the air for a large figure). But hey: they're images ... you'll get to see lots of random pretty pictures. That must be better than looking for at at and the the, non? You know you'll love it. best wishes --Tagishsimon (talk)

I changed it to cc-by-sa, but there's not a whole lot of difference. Thanks for letting me know. - Hephaestos|§ 05:44, 22 Dec 2004 (UTC)

shodo image

[edit]

While I have no objection to that image being released under the GFDL, since I created the image it would have been nice if you'd asked before going ahead and putting it there. Exploding Boy 18:33, Jan 21, 2005 (UTC)

Dimma Image

[edit]

Thanks for finding the source to this image. As I told Quadell, I have a use for this image in article on my to do write list, and am quite glad to find copyright free. Good work !! Dsmdgold 20:43, Feb 10, 2005 (UTC)

Adding images

[edit]

Thank you for the information regarding photos. I knew that I should be doing something extra! But tell me, what do I add the tags and where do I put them? --PassionVine 21:09, 19 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Re: Zelda Images

[edit]

The images themseles are copyrighted to Nintendo, however they are avaible for third-party use and distibution, which is how I obtained them. I hope this answers your question. Ereinion File:Maltese Cross.png 00:05, 20 Feb 2005 (UTC)

I'm not entirely sure I know what you mean... Nintendo has their policy regarding copyrights, trademarks, and intellectual properties published on their company's home page. I could create such a template that you were suggesting if indeed the current templates Wikipedia has are in some way unsuitable. Ereinion File:Maltese Cross.png

Under U.S. copyright law, partial works are allowed to be used for commentary or teaching. In the case of Nintendo, it wouldn't be practical to give a statement stating that their copyrights are given free license because they still use the intellectual rights, however distribution is still permitted with the acknowledgement that Nintendo owns all rights to its respective works and properties. This is my understanding. You can research this more indepth if you like at the Reproductions of Copyrighted Works by Educators and Librarians section. Ereinion File:Maltese Cross.png 00:26, 21 Feb 2005 (UTC)

The proposal to re-tag the images is agreed. EreinionFile:RAHSymbol.JPG

Image deletion

[edit]

Greetings! Over at the Commons, some images I've uploaded are being considered for deletion. I'd be interested in hearing your honest opinion on the matter there. Thanks! – Quadell (talk) (sleuth) 13:07, Feb 21, 2005 (UTC)

Image CSgt Wayne Mills

[edit]

Hi Zeimusu! I took the photo of Wayne in September 2004, so technically any copyright is mine but , I uploaded it for anyone to use, as long as they don't try to earn money from it, so as far as I am concerned it's now public domain. Richard Harvey 21:41, 21 Feb 2005 (UTC)

well the photo of beloyannis was published on a newspaper at the time, and i used from a collection of images i got. the newspaper shutdown decades ago, so i don't think there's a copyright holder

the logo of the Communist Party of Greece is public domain of course

Return of the Untagged Image project

[edit]

You were kind enough to contribute to the Wikipedia:Untagged images project; I beg to draw your attention to part 2 of the project - there are about 12,000 more images in need of tagging. Any assistance you could provide would be most welcome. thanks --Tagishsimon (talk)

[edit]

This image, uploaded by User:Grutness is credited to you. Do you release it under the terms of the gfdl? Zeimusu | Talk 04:24, 1 Mar 2005 (UTC)

It was an image I took and uploaded to the commons. Grutness then edited it to improve contrast and balance, and uploaded it to en. I've now moved it to the commons and deleted the one on en. I've placed it in the public domain.-gadfium 06:21, 1 Mar 2005 (UTC)

In view of User:Anthere's complaint - see [1] - it would be wise if Wikipedia:Image sleuthing participants contacted, at least, user's talk pages as part of moving images onto WP:IFD. IFD has hitherto asked for that step to be taken as a courtesy. Besides which, in this case, the image has only been on wikipedia for 13 days ... I respect it is an ophan, but unless you know more it is possible the poor newbie is still trying to work out how to attach it to a page. best wishes --Tagishsimon (talk)

OK Well it's only an orphan because I orphaned it. I contacted the uploader when it was first uploaded (see the uploader discussion), I'll contact them again.Zeimusu | Talk

Modular electronics diagrams

[edit]

What do you think of this proposal?

Wikipedia:Village_pump_(proposals)#Modular_electronics_diagrams

Please leave comments there. Just bringing this to the attention of a handful of people who might care... - Omegatron 00:57, Mar 6, 2005 (UTC)

spec miata & mwhf images

[edit]

spec_miata.jpg is a PD-self

mwhf.gif is for use of/with wikipedia only/not public domain, as he will be selling the series in a book sometime down the road.

i would tag these myself, but i can't seem to find where to go back and edit these with proper tags. let me know where they go and i'd be more than happy to do this in the future - i couldn't find where this was done in any of the "help literature"...

Sikkim

[edit]

Thanks for the images upload to the commons. Unfortunately I have a dialup connection so it would be too much for me to reupload all the images there. I also have uploaded images to Kalimpong, Calcutta, Tsongmo Lake and Gangtok. Nichalp 20:16, Mar 13, 2005 (UTC)

Nagarjuna

[edit]

Thanks for your feedback on the Nagarjuna image - glad you liked it. Yes, it is GDFL - you can see it listed as such if you blow the thumbnail up. You are most welcome to use it however you want Cheers, John Hill.

About those images

[edit]

Hi. Indeed I'm in fault regarding those and some other images. I haven't yet gotten around to them because I've had limited time to edit, which is worsened by the fact that the website keeps crashing every five minutes. In the cases of those images, I got them in the special website setup by the Brazilian Olympic Committee during the 2004 Olympics. The images published there had a promotional/divulgation purpose, and were not tagged with copyright disclaimers. I believe that the website is gone now (will double check that though), but it was a very singular situation, since images such as those are usually the property of news agencies and/or photographers. They were posted during the Olympics as part of a day-by-day coverage of the performance of Brazilian athletes in the games. I will go about adding those explanations to each image's page asap. [edit]

Thanks for the message. I hadn't added a copyright tag to that image yet as I'm still trying to understand each type. For that image how do you ensure the artist is protected whilst still letting people use the image? Or is that what you have done by using gfdl, but specifying it for the digitization? Cheers.SeanMack 14:03, 10 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Hey Zeimusu, gdfl is fine, submit away.SeanMack 11:52, 11 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Tried to nominate, but it didn't seem to update the page - dunno if there is a delay?

I'm quite sure this image qualifies as "fair use". I know the photographer and he has given permission to use his photos - specifically those of Robert Graves - for non-commercial purposes as long as he is credited for the photo.

Is there a proforma other than "fair use" for this kind of situation?

I've added a statement to the source:

http://www.robertgraves.org/gallery/rab_photos?page=1

I hope this clarifies the rights on the photo?

Avante

[edit]

I really can't explain you how the newspaper frontpages are PD, the first two are historical documents, released in several publications and shown in several expostitions, along with that, being a member of the Party, I obviously reported my work about it in wikipedia. But you could perform the proof by contacting the "owners" of the pictures, the Portuguese Communist Party, or Avante! Editions:

PCP Headquarters: Rua Soeiro Pereira Gomes, 3 1600-196 Lisboa, Portugal Phone: +351 217813800 Fax: +351 217969126 e-mail: pcp@pcp.pt

Avante! admin: Av. Gago Coutinho, 121 1700-029 Lisboa, Portugal editorial.avante@pcp.pt or avante@pcp.pt

Thanks anyway for the warning.

PUI

[edit]

Thanks for giving me a hand on this. A key part of it is notifying the uploader that their image has been listed. This can be done with {{subst:idw-pui|IMAGENAME}}. If you are unclear about anything, there are instructions on the top of the PUI page. Cheers. Burgundavia (✈ take a flight?) 13:41, May 27, 2005 (UTC)

Thanks for the deletion warning. I can't verify the source, let alone the "freeness" of the image. So away it goes, I guess. -- Uncle Ed (talk) 16:46, Jun 3, 2005 (UTC)

Image Copyrights

[edit]

Oh how I hate those Secret Police that sneak up and catch you on copyright issues! *cries* We Internet Pirates are just trying to illustrate the articles to provide some visual play for the mind as it reads...but then you ruin everything asking for proof of copyright waivers! =Þ (Just kidding around) Anyways, for the OperationMegaphone.jpg picture, I kinda assume it's public domain released by the DND, since it appeared in all Canadian newspapers regardless of parent companies...but other than that, I couldn't really speak either way on the issue. Sherurcij 08:50, Jun 5, 2005 (UTC)

Hey, about Image:Machinenpistole 18.jpg, would it just be safer to put it as fair use? I'm really new to Wikipedia, so if you could help me out here it would be great! - The Glock

Double-tagging

[edit]

Please do not double tag images where a derivation is made unless you are sure that you know what license the deriver is using. This makes things terribly unclear now, since if uploading with an alternate license effectively renders the work dual-licensed, it is difficult to know what license the person making the derivation is using, the alternate license, or the GFDL. Image of Larisa Latynina

[edit]

Hi, Zeimusu

The evidence for public domain can be seen at Image:Larisa Latynina.jpg, though I don't know whether this is true or not. You should ask User:Cmapm who uploaded that image. --Voyager 28 June 2005 09:32 (UTC)

Hi. Well, for this image, I didn't dig into copyright issue details, because I used image with the same source and the same tag as an example (Image:Ray Ewry.jpg). Perhaps I was wrong to do so. Unfortunately, I haven't enough time to dig into it now, if you believe, that another tag should be more suitable, would you be so kind to replace it yourself? I'm sorry. Best regards. Cmapm 28 June 2005 13:05 (UTC)

Rum Image

[edit]

The reason I removed the image from rum is that I am planning to submit the article to WP:FAC. Having an image of unknown source is a common objection given against candidate articles, and I felt it was better to avoid the problem entirely. --Allen3 talk July 1, 2005 11:18 (UTC)

I have returned the image inside of comments as you suggested. --Allen3 talk July 1, 2005 14:39 (UTC)

I've added the Fair Use tag onto the page already, for your information. I should have added this and I forgot. I don't upload pictures that often, I do editings. I'm trying to make the pages of all the former Governors of Hong Kong look more presentable, with pictures and all. This is a large project! --Arbiteroftruth 06:56, 18 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry about that. the picture was mine so I gfdled it. For some reason I thought that this process was automatic now. I quess this is what i get for thinking. i get to be wrong . . . . . . ... again. Carptrash 04:56, 24 August 2005 (UTC) though you might have to remove the big RED thing on the picture.[reply]

PS I posted apicture earlier at Samuel Cashwan of Cashwan. On the picture page I explained my process, but perhaps it should be labeled "fair use" ? I suspect that you understand these things better than I do. Carptrash 05:01, 24 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks a lot for your help...

Dear Zeimusu,

Thank you for your answers and feedbacks. I'll get the copyright infos of those pics and re-upload them back with the copyright info.

Once again, thank you - Hezery99

For the notice on those images. What is your opinion on the case?

Take care, Molotov (talk) 19:55, 13 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I don't think they should be deleted. I added the pictures for a reason, I guess I'll let public WikiDecision decide because I have wanted to leave here for quite some time already. Molotov (talk) 02:38, 14 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Re:Image:JOSE BUSCAGLIA GUILLERMETY.jpg

[edit]

Thank you for bringing the issue to my attention. The image was a Press Release and not public domain as you pointed out. I guess I "pushed" the wrong button, you know those things do happen. I made the applicable change. Have a nice day Tony the Marine 17:01, 15 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

That made a lot of sense. Thanks for the info. --Deepak|वार्ता 17:56, 29 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Ok, if I added the same image in the Mahabharata article and described the scene to the image's caption, would it still be a copyright violation? --Deepak|वार्ता 18:10, 29 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Ive found the painting on many sites: [2], [3], [4], [5], [6], [7], [8]. This shows that the image is not restricted to one organisation or person. This one doesnt seem to have any such copyright law. How about changing the tag to {{fairusein|Mahabharata}}. I dont have much knowledge about the copyright laws so I need some guidance here.
