The syntax used here for placenames which conflict with the same name in another administrative/geographic region ("foo (bar)") is not what the English Wikipedia seems to have standardized on for placenames; rather, general style on this Wikipedia seems to be to use "foo, bar" for placenames. The relevant policy page is at Wikipedia:Naming conventions (city names)), and while there apparently is no fully formalized policy on the English Wikipedia for all countries (argh, what a nightmare it will be if it's country by country!), I do see a note in the Talk: page about French cities, but no resolution. See Rochefort (disambiguation) for an example of places in France done with the "," style. Noel (talk) 01:19, 2 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Approximately 90% of the French communes needing disambiguation are disambiguated as "Commune, département". You are right, there has not been any resolution for the disambiguation of French communes, and there is no "official" way of doing so in France. Thus, for the time being, the de facto consensus (most common usage) within Wikipedia is "Commune, département". olivier 08:10, Feb 2, 2005 (UTC)
