Describing the protestors of the Vietnam War as "anti-war militants" is hardly NPOV. Daniel C. Boyer

  • November 28 - First two women priests ordinated in the Anglican Church of England - The Church of England did not approve the ordaination of women until 1992. In 1971 two women priests were ordained in Hong Kong. I don't know if the Anglican Church in Hong Kong is sometimes described as part of the Church of England, but I doubt it - maybe just part of the Anglican Communion. But as far as the CofE is concerned, it did not have any women priests before 1992. I've removed the entry.

Also changed HM Maze Prison to Long Kesh. That was the name it was generally known as in 1971. People only used the Maze name in the 1980s.

Duvalier

[edit]

Also changed Papa doc Devalier's reference from despot to despotic president as he was officially Haiti's president, much as it revolts me to have to say it. STÓD/ÉÍRE 00:08 Apr 4, 2003 (UTC)

Page layout years

[edit]

There is a discussion on my talk page on page layout.

For most of the last three hundred years there is inconsistency and duplication between the year in topic paragraph, the "see also" box and what is on the year by topic pages. Prior to 1950 I am pretty convinced we can painlessly (except for sore fingers) delete all of the year in topic paragraphs and ensure that the material goes into a "see also" box, creating such a box where none exists. Post 1950, particularly from the "year in US television" link a lot of material has been added to this paragraph as highlights (sometimes making up most of the page content pointed at).

Personally I think we should still delete the paragraph, keep the box linking to the topic sites and move any particularly important parts of the year in topic paragraph to the main chronological list. This does involve undoing quite a bit of work which someone has done.

Therefore, unlike for prior to 1950 (where I've said no objection= I do it) for post 1950 I won't touch these pages unless a significant number of people agree with the change. (I am also unlikely to get the pre 1950 stuff done before summer unless the service speed improves dramatically). talk--BozMo 14:02, 7 May 2004 (UTC)[reply]

Four billionth baby?

[edit]

The 1971 page lists July 16th 1971 as the day the four billionth baby was born, but I followed the "world population" link where it says that world population reached four billion in 1974.

The summary page for 1974 makes a similar statement. A summary page such as this should at least demonstrate consistency. So I removed it. --snowlizard (talk) 00:29, 14 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Is her birthday a world event?

No, but as a notable person born in 1971, it is correct that she is listed in the Births section of this article. Best name (talk) 13:15, 29 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Greenpeace

[edit]

According to the Greenpeace page, they officially changed their name from Don't Make A Wave on May 4, 1972. Was there some 'unofficial' use of the name in 1971 to justify its inclusion here (under Unknown Date)? -Jeff Worthington 22:46, 29 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Introduction

[edit]

"known as the year of cyclohexanol" - *what* ? I don't understand this, there's no reference elsewhere in the page to cyclohexanol ... Is this a clever joke and I'm too dim to spot it? 132.244.246.25 (talk) 08:36, 14 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hey everybody, I'm just checking to see if someone who can edit this article could put in the birth of Markos Moulitsas Zúñiga. It's september 13th. Please correct me if I'm wrong. I think he's some kind of soldier or general but please put a mention.

Just checking, --**Najezeko**:) 20:55, 3 October 2010 (UTC) —Preceding unsigned comment added by Najzeko (talkcontribs)

1971 collage

[edit]

The collage recently added seemed to be unbalanced, with 3 of 8 images centering on one country and 5 of 8 based on event in the region. Please review and highly suggest being more global.--☾Loriendrew☽ (ring-ring) 18:55, 7 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

what "3 of 8 images centering on one country" you refer The0Quester (talk) 23:40, 7 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
There are three showcasing East Pakistan/Bangladesh, two about the Liberation War and one for the cyclone. Additionally there is one of an event in Japan and another, although US based, is about Vietnam, which aggregates 5 of 8 images to the generally southeast Asian area. The collage should be a bit more global.--☾Loriendrew☽ (ring-ring) 00:58, 8 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
The revised 1971 collage
So i revised it and replaced two of the three Bangladesh images: The tank one that represented the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971 i replaced it with a portrait of Idi Amin who represents the Ugandan coup d'état; and the Odisha cyclone one i replaced it with a drawing of Salyut 1, the first space station. The0Quester (talk) 10:12, 8 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Always hard to pick a top list, hence my general disapproval of collages. This new grouping does spread things out a bit.--☾Loriendrew☽ (ring-ring) 00:35, 9 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
No, we should reopen this discussion. Many events were happening in Bangladesh this year that drew in international attention, and we should at least add back the Liberation War. Also, I recommend replacing Salyut 1 with the 1971 San Fernando earthquake. DementiaGaming (talk) 22:20, 14 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I disagree. The Bangladesh genocide and the Bangladesh Liberation War can be summarized in just one grid in the collage with a couple of extra lines in the subtitles; in addition, I believe the Salyut 1 is very important, as it was the first space station in the history of mankind, and the crew of Soyuz 11 were the only humans to have died in space, so it should be as significant as Apollo 1 in your 1967 collage; also, there are too few events from the Soviet Union in the annual collage from the Cold War period, which is very unreasonable. As one of the world's two superpowers, it should be given the same importance as the United States. If there's a need to add the 1971 San Fernando earthquake, my suggestion is to replace it with the establishment of the United Arab Emirates. Nagae Iku (talk) 08:51, 16 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Our second option is the Ugandan coup d’etat. It is absurd to me that this is on here in the first place. 0 people were killed in this obscure coup in a small country that changed nothing. Meanwhile, the Liberation War resulted in the death of 340,000 people and was the direct cause of the independence of Bangladesh. DementiaGaming (talk) 21:34, 16 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
No, I think this is also very important. During the coup, there were indeed no casualties, but after the coup was successful, Idi Amin set out to sweep away the remnants of Milton Obote's government, resulting in 5,000 deaths. Moreover, during Idi Amin's eight-year rule following the coup, he caused the deaths of 100,000 to 500,000 people, which can be considered as ethnic cleansing. He is also one of the most famous tyrants in Africa. Here's a link to a webpage where he is ranked at the top: https://afrikanza.com/blogs/culture-history/worst-african-dictators.
Anyway, I don't think Idi Amin's grid should be replaced. Nagae Iku (talk) 03:05, 17 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
You’re talking about events after the coup, post-1971. There is still an argument to replace it. DementiaGaming (talk) 02:32, 18 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
1991 Soviet coup d'état attempt which resulted in only 6 deaths, is still significant in the collages of 1991 because it was part of the larger process of the dissolution of the Soviet Union; it symbolized the dissolution of the Soviet Union. Similarly, the 1971 Ugandan coup d'état marked the beginning of Idi Amin's large-scale massacres. Even if we do not consider his actions after 1972, he cleaned and massacred 5000 people in 1971 is noteworthy. Nagae Iku (talk) 11:21, 18 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
And our third option is the floppy disk. It may have been introduced in 1971, but it began to get popular only years later.
In 1971, people would much likely see “BANGLADESH LIBERATION WAR FOLLOWS CYCLONE” and “MILLIONS KILLED IN BANGLADESH GENOCIDE” on the newspaper headlines than “FLOPPY DISK INTRODUCED” DementiaGaming (talk) 14:07, 18 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
