New Scholarship

[edit]

The criticism section needs revision based on the above. The fraud narrative doesn't hold up to recent data.

Also, the entire homestead act must be viewed in the sectional crisis it was created in. Before criticizing it, put it in historical place, and propose an alternative.

Native Americans?

[edit]

I assume that some of the previous occupants of the land had some problems due to the arrival of so many new people claiming ownership of the land. The article really should include a section covering this — GhostInTheMachine talk to me 18:05, 31 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

:I agree, the article focuses on the homesteaders rather than the previous land inhabitants. Planning to write a section on minorities affected by the act, like natives and black people. This is briefly mentioned in the background and history sections. -- Pcarney1 (talk) 19:30, 11 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
maybe it's been edited since your comment, because my impression first reading it was the intro makes it sound like the PURPOSE of the Homestead Act was to screw over the indigenous. I don't think so. 216.41.179.29 (talk) 20:47, 7 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
now i'm logged in, that 1 was mine. instead of the "intro" i meant the "background" section. Paragraphs should be moved from there to "Issues and Concerns". Mvm-trinity (talk) 20:52, 7 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Montana 1904 Flathead Allotment Act

[edit]

Is this connected and should it be added to the article? Viriditas (talk) 20:06, 22 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

This article adds "When the 1910 Homestead Act opened the unallotted reservation land to settlement by non-Indians, newcomers eagerly staked out the prime farmland" right after mentioning the 1904 act. Certainly part of the plan to get settlers onto the land quickly. Would be interesting to compile how many reservations were impacted by this type of legislation. The sources I'm looking at over at Flathead Lake Biological Station say it definitely impacted the reservations associated with the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes. Viriditas (talk) 00:54, 23 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Definitely worth adding as another aspect of encouraging settlement on "surplus" areas of reservations. Fort Berthold Indian Reservation is another example. As these areas are still part of the reservation, there is often tension over control that the tribes have such as hunting. Adflatusstalk 18:55, 23 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
